Update! Where has quizzing gone in the California South District?

I posted a couple of weeks ago that the SoCal District

didn't have any quiz programs. Well, apparently,

someone got on the ball and woke some people up.

Just the other day I was contacted and was told that

SoCal District will have quizzing this year. A makeshift

schedule for tournaments is on the board now.

Anyways, thanks to whomever got that ball rolling. Your

young people need a Bible Quiz program in your District.

Updated Junior Bible Quiz Information!

Awhile back I had updated one of the weblinks, thinking that

I had a new website for UPCI Junior Bible Quizzing. To my

surprise and disappointment, I found that most of the links

involved in this (new site), didn't work.

So I just replaced that link with the official UPCI site till further

notice. On this site you can download the Extravaganza entry

form and get updated info for the national finals that will be held

in Branson Missouri this year.

I personally attempt to always have the correct information on

hand or if I don't know for sure, will take the time to get the

correct information. I hope this helps some of those, looking

for information.

Apps, apps, and more Apps!

Yep, the Bible Quizzing world is buzzing over all the

new toys that are available to help you learn your

material. I just updated my web blog with the

BQPowers video on Study-Pro.

What's neat about this app is you not only can get it

for the apple ipad, ipod, iphone, and itouch but this

app is now available for the android market and can

be purchased for the Kindle Fire, which I have.

I have to admit that I am not really a fan of electronic

products but when something hits a home run, I want

to let the Bible Quiz world know about it.

For a small price of $9.99, you get all the materials that

if you purchase separately from BQPowers would run

you around $150.

There are other people trying to make similar products

but this is by far, the best and well worth the $9.99 price

tag. This, again is a great product. One thing in closing

though, you still have to learn the material and memorize

it manually cause this product does not do the studying

Attempted Hack?

Someone decided to try and hack into my

web blog but were unsuccessful. You may

disagree with posts from time to time but

there is a place to vent your opinions on

this site. If you want to get input, please

do so as I am always open to other thoughts

and not just mine.

I have thought seriously of removing the

blog altogether but the feedback and

comments from around the world keep

us going strong.

I will soon start evaluating products and

other sites as the year goes on. I have

already had some experiences with some

of the products that have not been so

good but never fear, those products will

be rated on here soon.

Where has quizzing gone in the California South District?

I posted awhile back looking for info on the Southern

California District Bible Quizzing programs. After all,

they have a rich history of success on the Junior level

and at one time was one of the top Senior programs in

the state of California.

Many famous coaches and quizzers have come from the

southern area. After I posted that article, I was contacted

asking if I had any success in finding out any information

cause there was interest in quizzing some of these teams.

When I finally made contact with someone in that district,

I was dumbfounded to here that nobody could be found to

head up the programs in the district. You gotta be kidding

me, right?

Someone in leadership should be getting slapped around

for not promoting and pushing this program. It's a sad

day when of all things, we cannot provide a Bible Quiz

program for our youth not only of our local churches but

our district?

If I was a parent or a Pastor that live in the Southern

California District, I would be on the phone to Bro Art

Hodges asking why this is not happening and pushing

to find someone to get it rolling again.

Come on South Bay, Bellflower, San Bernadeno, Ventura,

Oxnard, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Eagle Rock, La Puente,

and others that have had active programs over the years.

I know that there are others that I have left out but you

get the point. Your counter parts are having a new

revived revival of quizzing in the Western District this

year. Right now, combined together, Western District

is running around 30 junior teams and 20 or so senior

teams.

Thank God for people like Bro Amador and Bro Barba

that have a burden for young peoples souls and not just

what they can do on a quiz table. Western District is

back on the map. Come on Southern California District,

come join us.

The newest Baby Sitter

I recently visited a friend to discuss some stuff

that I was working on. Well, it was a weekend

and nobody was at work so it was a prime time

to get caught up on things. When I got to this

persons place, I came in and sat down.

While I was waiting to chat, my friend was busy

engaging in a tweet or text or what ever. As they

tweeted away, I sat and it seemed like they didn't

even realize I was there. After about 15 minutes

of this, I finally got tired of waiting and decided

to leave.

The conversation was never done and the info

was never spoken about cause this person was

too busy tweeting and text.

You say why are you mentioning that today?

I have noticed a trend, especially in our church

where most of the kids and adults have itouches

and iphones. During a service, you can usually

see at the least ten of these on during the

preaching of the word. Kids are fast away playing

video games and the parents to busy to care.

It's amazing, the devil updates his ways with

time too. When ever something new hits the

market, it always seems to find it's way to the

church. Even in Bible Quizzing. Oh gotta get

that new app to learn my verses.

Funny thing is, you can have all the devices

you want and all the ipads, iphones, and

whatever you want to spend that money

on but regardless, you will still have to

learn the Word of God. You can't take a

shortcut nor buy any device to make you

memorize it any faster or easier, cause it's

the word of God.

Another sports hero bites the dust!

A few days ago a legend of football past

from this life. Now comes all the would

have, should have, could have comments

from people around the world.

Although, this person is in no way related

to the Bible Quiz world, it took only one

issue to go public, to tarnish this guys

reputation for life.

No matter what this guy has done or not

done, he will be judged for the rest of

eternity because he made a mistake.

Coaches, quizzers, and preachers, people

make mistakes. It's how we react as

Christians that makes a difference.

As a coach, I have taught my quizzers

for years to never put a lot of energy

into sports personalities cause ultimately,

they will let you down, every time.

Our world, our church people, get caught

up on a name or a person of power, or

someone who holds a place in high

places. Be careful who you allow into

your life, cause you never know what

the outcome will bring forth.

Breaking News! WPF finally comes out with it's own version of Regional gear.

Have you met them?

I was recently reminded of a couple I know that brings

a very interesting response from people they know. My

connection was through quizzing and beyond. I would

see them and the first thing out of the mouth would be

how well their kids had done. As a coach, you will have

those types of experiences because of the people you

work with. With that said, time has gone on and these

same people when you come across them always make

a point to let you know what their kids are doing, what

accomplishments they have done and so on.

Now let me tell you that I understand the excitement

of letting everyone know how well your family is doing

but not every conversation we have. In quizzing, it is

so very important to let every young people know

just how important they really are and that God can

and will use a willing vessel, as long as you are doing

and giving your best effort.

As the quiz season moves into full swing mode coaches

and quizzers, remember that you are important and

so is your teammates. Pull from each other and use

every opportunity to pull wisdom and strength from

those who have been through the Bible Quiz battle

fields. Too many lose out with God cause they had it

built up in their heads that they were useless and not

worth anything to God.

Hey coach, that number 5 quizzer may just be your

next District Youth Leaders wife. Better yet, those

kids without the Holy Ghost might just be the next

leaders of tomorrow. Go ahead, take the chance, it

may just be well worth it all in the end.

The quizmaster asked the competitors to “quote the only verse to speak of the ‘oracles of God.’ ”

Sixteen-year-old Andrew Kellehan, wearing an intense stare above his shirt and tie, pressed his buzzer. He knew the Bible verse — one of the 544 he has committed to memory — but had to recite it within 30 seconds.

He didn’t take a breath.

Correct. Thirty points, plus 10 because Kellehan got eight questions correct in this match and “quizzed out.”

He left the table to applause from the crowd gathered at the Greater Columbus Convention Center to watch the North American Bible Quiz Tournament. He and his teammate, representing Texas, beat a team from Calvary Apostolic Church on the North Side.

Nearly 90 teams of teenagers from around the U.S. and Canada have ascended to this national tournament after winning Bible-quizzing contests at the regional and state levels. The tournament began on Sunday and ends Wednesday.

The competition is sponsored by the United Pentecostal Church International and will lead into its three-day North American Youth Congress, which starts Wednesday night. About 18,000 young people are expected to attend.

The denomination believes that Bible quizzing is a good way to teach Scripture, discipline and socialization.

“This is a tool our organization has used to help our children learn the Bible,” said Anita Kellehan, Andrew’s mom and coach.

The kids who participate in Bible quizzing said the competitions are both pressure-filled and fun. They spend at least an hour a day for months, working on their memorization. Quizmaster Russ Faubert posed 20 questions per match. The competitors often interrupted him with the answers before he could finish the questions.

Sometimes, he asked for recitations of certain verses, giving clues but not a citation of which verse he wanted. Sometimes, he’d ask a question, such as, “In how many verses does Paul describe Timothy as son?” and then ask for the citations.

A scoreboard broadcast the points and how many seconds remained for each answer and timeout.

Players who disagreed with Faubert’s rulings could contest the call. They would approach the judges’ table, where three men in suits issued final decisions. Players who buzzed in before the question even began — yes, that happens — lost five points for the “foul.”

Kellehan lived in Lancaster in Fairfield County and Thornville in Perry County from 2003 to 2007 before his family moved to Texas, and used to “quiz” for New Life Christian Center in Lancaster. He’s been training for 10 years and spends at least an hour a day on it, he said.

That diligence has paid off. At the aforementioned match, he scored a career-high 170 points. He was awarded a gold medal with a cross on it, presented to the music from Chariots of Fire.

The quiz contests can resemble serious sporting events, often going down to the wire, said Adrian Hood, 14, a quizzer from Denver.

“It’s like (there’s) three seconds left in a basketball game, and then Michael Jordan shoots and makes it,” he said. “It’s that intense.”

It’s also really fun, said Tanner Carroll, 15, of Glenford in Perry County. Tanner is on the Westerville team that Kellehan’s team beat. The Westerville team has won a national title in its division for the past four years.

Carroll learned all this year’s verses — seven books of the Bible — in a month and a half.

His memory is photographic, he said, but he still has to recite all the verses every day.

“It’s amazing,” he said of his hobby. “My life pretty much revolves around quizzing.”

Introduction

So you’re sitting in your Social Studies class at

school and then it happens. Out of nowhere your

teacher informs you that there is a test the next

day. Your evening is shot. The dismissal bell rings

and you file out of your classroom dreading the next

day’s test. You walk in the door of your house that

afternoon, grab a snack from the kitchen, and head

straight to your room to study. No Facebook or

Twitter. No texting. No X-box or Playstation.

Just names, places, and dates. You rack your brain

trying to cram as much into it as possible before the

next day’s test. You feel as if your brain is going to

explode and you look at the clock by your bed only

to realize that you have only been studying for thirty

minutes. You study as much as you can before finally

giving up and falling asleep. You wake up the next

morning, pick up your drool covered Social Studies

book and quickly get ready for school. You convince

yourself that you will have plenty of time to study on

the way to school and in homeroom, but later you

realize that you just can’t bring yourself to cram any

more information into that over saturated brain of

yours.

Then the moment of truth comes. You get the test in

your hand, and then it happens. You realize you don’t

know the answers to the questions that you knew the

night before. You do your best to finish the test,

knowing in the back of your mind that you

completely bombed. Life is full of tests.

Many of these tests, which we have all experienced in

one way or another, are as unexpected as the Social

Studies test given in the example above. You will face

tests in your life. It’s not a question of “if” but rather

“when” they will happen. The real question is whether

or not you will be able to pass those tests when they arise.

Consider life an open book test. Your textbook is your Bible.

In the Word of God you can find the answers to all of life’s test

questions. But will you know the answers when the time comes

for that test? You can, if you commit yourself to the process

of preparation through memorizing Scripture.

IPod Touch update

Well it didn't take long to find out information

on how to update my IPod. After about two

days on the internet digging for information

I found the solution I was looking for and it

works! So now I have an updated IPod with

3.0.1 upgraded from the dreaded 2.21.

I have added all the BQLearning software

and other useful stuff I couldn't get before. I

will update you more as I use this thing on

my daily life stuff.

An Ipod touch owner now!

Yep, I broke down this past weekend and purchased

an older Ipod Touch from a starving college kid. It's

not that fancy and seems to be one of the older ones

but who cares, I own one now. The sad thing is I can't

use any of the apps that are out there now cause I

don't have IiOS 3.0 or later. Anybody know about

jailbreaking 2.11 on one of these things? Anyways, I

can get email and check the web on stuff, who knows,

I will update as I see fit. One thing I will use it for is

I will post results and notes from our local

tournaments. Here we go!

Bobby Long, when not assembling trophies from his home

in Houston Texas, heads up our Junior Bible Quiz program.

Involved in quizzing for many years, he and his wife spend

countless hours traveling around the United States proclaiming

the good news of Junior Bible Quizzing. You cannot find a more

hard working, dedicated individual, who puts in many hours

behind the scene to promote this thing called Bible Quizzing.

The other helper reading and promoting quizzing around the

country is Steven Waddell. He was the Junior Bible Quiz

Coordinator for the Indiana District and before relocating

now resides in the Texas area. Another one of those tireless

workers who promote the quiz ministry around the country.

Breaking News - BQLearn Update!

For those interested in the new BQLearn App, approval is still pending for Apple App Store (for iPhones/iPads) and Amazon App Store (for Kindle Fire). I just updated the app in the Android Market (for android phones/tablets) and the Chrome Web Store (for PCs and Macs). I am fairly certain that the update can be freely downloaded if you already purchased. New to version 1.1 is the ability to practice verse beginnings and to practice unique words. The quizzer will be shown a verse beginning and will have to think of the reference, or will be shown a reference and will have to think of the verse beginning. For unique word practice, the quizzer will be shown a unique word and will have to think of the reference for the verse containing that word. This will give quizzers a quick way to self-study verse beginnings and unique words on the go. Perhaps I can add 2 time and 3 time word drills in a later version.

During devotions with the children today I asked the question: "Why did God create Mothers?" Our 6 year old Emily sat up straight, flipped her braids and very excitedly stated: "I know! I know!" To which I replied: "Go ahead, tell us why." Her response: "God made Mothers because if there were no Mothers, life would be messed up. You could do anything you wanted to, even steal. God had way too much monkey skin left over so he had to make mothers out of that! That is why God made mothers and your monkey skin is very soft Mommy!" ((LOL)) Needless to say, we had a lesson on creation right after that! Haha

What Should We Teach Our Children?

Recently an individual approached me with the following question?

In your opinion what is the greatest challenge that the church faces?
In my opinion the greatest challenge of the church today is the passing down of biblical truths to the next generations. We are seeing an eroding of our biblical mandate to be distinct as the people of God from the our present day society. This is being happening in all area's from actions, words, thoughts, and appearance. This is happening because of the failure of parents to assume the responsibility to teach their children the Word of God. Today's parents are trying to place this on the church when in reality it is their calling (Deuteronomy 6:1-7). When we look at the biblical mandate of Deuteronomy 6:1-7 we see that the parents are to teach. What are they to teach: First they are to teach Doctrine (Vs 4), especially of One God which is the theological mark of the people of God. Secondly they are to teach a passion for the things of God (vs 5). This passion is represented by the thought of "love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might! This is to be done "diligently" (vs 7) that is, when ever there is an opportunity (vs 8) when you are interacting with your children!
The importance of these verses can be understood by the response that Jesus gives to a scribe when He is asked the question of "Which commandment is the first?"(Mark 12:28) He responded with the scriptures we have quoted above in Deuteronomy 6:4-5! It is interesting that He does quote one of the "Ten Commandments" of Exodus 20! In fact He will state that all of the Law the hangs on two principals: The first is that " God, who is one, is to be loved with the total being" and "to love your neighbor as yourself"! (12:32) There are no commandments greater! (12:31).

It is not the first generation child of God who is coming out of a life that was influenced by a world of Godless values, by fleshly desires and sin who are struggling with understanding the importance of being a distinct individual from this societies values. But those who have been never been involved in a life of sin, who have been raised in the church are turning away! This was the same problem of Israel when they desired to be like other nations and have a king (1 Samuel 8:5, 20). They are replacing the leader of their nation from the King of the Universe who has unlimited wisdom and power to an earthly human king who very limited in wisdom and power. Thus the battle has not changed!

What is a nation? They are groups formed on the basis of political or social interests or on kinship /Elwell, W. A., & Beitzel, B. J. (1988). Baker encyclopedia of the Bible (1527). Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker Book House./. The people of God wanted to be defined as a nation by their political ruler! They wanted a ruler who would be visual! The people of God desire to be like other nations not understanding they are to be not like a nation (people) but like God (1 Peter 1:15-16; Lev 11:44-45)! When we are like others we feel that we will be accepted by them! We do not understand to be accepted by God not people is what we should strive for!

What should we being our children? Parents should be teaching their children the doctrine of the church and what passion for God looks like!

internet. Just when you need an importent piece
of information, the website decides to lockup.

Hopefully, Sister Wilson is just doing some

I have noticed people that add this blog for what ever reasons, then remove themselves not that long after. This blog is an informational board of comments, articles, ads,and whatever else concerning Bible quizzing. Depending what I find or am aware of, the staff here do try and spice it up from time to time. So if your not sure that this is what you are looking for, that's fine. I once heard a message preached about what level do you
want to play on. In Bible Quizzing, you will encounter
many levels of ups and downs and excitement. Thing is,
you are the one who will control your destiny. If you
want to just be a quizzer who never progresses past
that 5th chair, then that's where you will stay.

As a coach, if you always give in to the parents wishes,
then you will never progress and grow as a program. You
will face times when you have have to make some tough
decisions. Some not so popular.

As a quizzer, not only do you deal with daily trials but
also your local per groups. Not everyone wants to quiz
and or dedicate to something that will take hours and
hours of time and dedication.

For new quizzers and coaches, as the new year approaches
and that first tournament is coming into sight, I ask you
again, what level do you want to play on?

You won't find him in the stores or on T.V.. He has NEVER made a movie or written a book. He does not live at the North Pole, nothing could for long. He doesn't drive a Mercedes or work at a Chevy Dealership. He doesn't drink Coke nor does he care if you bought your Kid a 4G phone. Santa's are the real Men and Women who are setting a national trend by walking into stores and paying off the layaway bills of complete strangers. Santa's are collecting and distributing food and clothing this week to those who have nothing. They are the shelter workers who find a warm place for those who have lost their homes this Christmas. They are the volunteers who man the Habitat for Humanity Stores and ring the bells in front of the corporate box stores or work tirelessly for a myriad of charities. Finally, the real Santa is the man or woman who decided to put aside their own needs so a child or loved one or a complete stranger could have their needs met. If you are a parent and worked hard to provide for your family...bless you...you are Santa. If you set aside some temporary pleasure so the least among us could smile by partaking in warm food or a clean bed, bless your Santa heart. You want Santa? Look inside. He is there just waiting to be let out. Take a chance...you don't even need a red suit. D

Breaking News! - New Bible Quiz learning tool.

A new app called BQLearn has been released for helping
quizzers memorize verses. The new app is called BQLearn
and can be found at http://www.upcquiz.com/apps/bqlearn.htm.

Instead of the current memorization method of looking at a
complete verse on a flash card, flipping it over to check
yourself, flipping back, etc. For more info go to upcquiz
for further information.

If the leadership of your church has asked you to teach, you are most likely called to be a teacher. Do not wait for a thunderbolt from heaven or a spectacular dream to confirm your calling. Your local leadership will use ministry needs, the candidate's gift evaluation, and the candidate's personal dedication to God and the Holy Spirit's guidance to make these choices. We all quickly find reasons not to take on more workload: "I do not have an education." I am afraid of speaking before people." "I'm too busy." "I am not the studious type." On and on go the excuses not to teach. But if we do not, who will? If not now, when?
Every Christian must find a place of service or ministry in the church. If it is not teaching, it must e something! We are not saved just to hang out. The kingdom of God needs help! Each of us is gifted by God in some are of service. Paul said, "The whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, caused growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love" (Ephesians 4:16 NKJV). Let us get motivated and find our place.
The teacher is called by God and given to the church as an anointed gift. We do not choose to be teachers; the initial choice is God's. It is then our choice to harmonize with his divine will. We are called to fulfill God's mission in the earth and that is to take the gospel to the entire world and to support the body of Christ with our gifts and ministries (Romans 1:5-6; I Corinthians 1:9). Paul exhorted teachers with these words: "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worth of the vocation wherewith ye are called" (Ephesians 4:1). The ministry of teaching is a dignified ministry. We should embrace it with enthusiasm and perform our duties with the integrity it deserves

2. The answer is found in a single verse …
The question may be derived from a verse or verses other than the one containing the answer, but this does not necessitate the CR label.

In instances where two or more verses contain the same information required by the question, so long as the question may be correctly answered from any individual verse, it need not be labeled a CR.
e.g. Unto the Lord, I will pay what? (see Psalms 116:14, 18.)

The identification of a pronoun (Part 2, section R, paragraph 6 of the manual) from a verse other than the primary verse in which the answer is derived does not necessitate the CR label.

e.g. Quote the first question asked in chapter 8. (See Psalms 8:3-4.) “Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein,” then shall what happen? (See Psalms 96:12-13.)

“Naturally” is defined by the order, progression, or flow of the Scripture. While an answer may, at times, be counted correct despite deviating from the natural flow of the Scripture, this does not indicate that the question should be labeled a CR.
e.g. According to chapter 92, what is a good thing? (See Psalm 92:1-3.)
Quote the first two verses of chapter …

The Scripture flows “seamlessly” when every word (or essence thereof in non-quotation questions) contained in the natural flow is required to complete the answer. Incorrect or nonessential information constitutes a break in the flow, and would then necessitate the CR label.

Therefore, a question IS a Cross-Reference Question if …

1. All parameters of the question are not specified prior to inducing an interruption.
Fundamental to a CR question is the concept of a “search.” The parameters of a question tell quizzers exactly where to go when providing the answer. Parameters act as the “boundaries” of the question, outside of which quizzers need not stray to correctly answer the question. There is, therefore, no “search” involved.

Without any parameters, or with only partial parameters, quizzers must “search” the scope of the material (or chapter) to correctly and completely answer the question.
When parameters come intermittently during the reading of the question (and not all at the beginning), quizzers must “search” during the question to anticipate the connection between different parts of the question/answer.

2. The answer is derived from more than one verse …
Also fundamental to a CR question is the concept of “crossing” material. A correct and complete CR answer is therefore derived from more than one verse. Even consecutive verses may contain information that may be “crossed” and require that a question asked from them be labeled CR (see below).

… and does not flow naturally and seamlessly from one verse to the next. If even a single word, incorrect or nonessential to the answer, breaks the natural flow, the question should be labeled a CR.

Using the term “consecutive” in the question still requires the CR label.
e.g. Quote the two consecutive verses naming …

Such a question should be labeled a CR, since it meets all the criteria of a CR question …
- no specific parameters given
- answer is derived from more than one verse
- answer does not necessarily flow naturally from one verse to the next, as the second of the two consecutive verses could be given first, and the answer still counted correct

It also requires a “search,” however minimal. If a quizzer finds one, he must still determine whether the consecutive verse precedes or follows the verse he’s found, thus, a search. If a question writer, therefore, chooses to aid the quizzer by using the term “consecutive,” they may do so, but the question should still be labeled a CR.

One more month of small distractions and then it's full steam

ahead. We have been very busy preparing for the upcoming

quiz year. I do have to say that this will be a very interesting

year. When you are in the process of learning your Pentecostal

DNA and not just a bunch of verses, can bring a sort of excitement

as we devi into what this whole thing we call, living for God is

about. The neat thing is, it never gets old, it never gets tiring

and it never becomes stale. Looking forward to more to come

as the days turn into weeks and the weeks into months. As

Update! Where is my material?

This is an update to the article I posted a couple of weeks

ago about where our materials were. After review of the

charting materials, I have to say my hat is off to those

who are working hard at making these materials available.

In my previous post I was wondering why everything

was so hard to put out but after seeing the newest

materials, I can see why they were so difficult. To

be honest, I would be real surprised that someone

could contain so much of the material. Anyways,

thumbs up to the BQpowers staff for a job well done.

What's up with materials this year?

I am posting this author response because of the questions
surrounding lack of some materials. I am aware of some
setbacks on charting, questions, and other materials.

I wrote an article several months ago regarding why our
materials have to be changed around every year.Well, this
is a good example why we should just leave it the way it is
and not mess with it. One of the reasons given is because
the material is difficult? I scratch my head as to why that
changed? Again, if the material was just left alone,
there would not be this current issue.

On a different note, it was recently brought forth that Bro
Haney, our former General Superintendent of the UPCI
was the one who started Bible Quizzing. This was news
as this was the first time I had ever heard that. Anyway,
I guess I learn something new everyday.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy thanksgiving. God

Saturday was the Western District Bible Quiz seminar
for coaches and quizzers. It was held in the lovely city
of Manteca California. There was some great
information given and shared with all that
were in attendance.

Thank you Bro Thorson for the great words of wisdom
and experience. Next was Sister Westland who spoke
about being a new coach and the needs that she felt
were important. These presentations were from the
heart and were well received.

Bro Wallace also gave some great info on team
preparation and Sister Denny gave some great
tips from a quizzers stand point, and finally Bro
Diaz, thanks for the resource information.

Junior Bible Quizzing Age Requirerments

I had this question posed by several requests. So here is the rule for quizzer elgibility on the Junior and Beginner level.

B. ELIGIBILITY OF QUIZZERS - Juniors

B. ELIGIBILITY OF QUIZZERS
1. To be eligible to participate in the Junior Bible
Quiz program, one must be not more than eleven years
of age as of January 1 for the given quiz year. To
be eligible to compete in the Beginner division, one
must be not more than eight years of age as of January 1
for the given quiz year. In the event that that a quizzer
that turns twelve on January 1 of the given quiz year
will be eligible to quiz as a junior quizzer. In the
event that a quizzer that turns nine on January 1 of the
given quiz year, he or she will be eligible to quiz as a
beginner quizzer.

2. The young person must be in good standing and faithful
in attendance to his/her local church. Other qualifications,
if any, will be established by the pastor.

3. If a member of a registered team in a district relocates
prior to the district tournament or the North American Junior
Bible Quiz Tournament (NAJBQT), he/she is still eligible to
remain a member of the team and compete during that year of
competition.

I just want to take a moment to welcome all new quiz teams
that have gotten started and are in the process of preparing
for the up coming quiz year. This year will be a little different
than the last couple as we will be studying the Bible Doctrine
of the UPCI. It will not be an easy year as you will be spread
all over your material. The good thing is you will get an up
close and personnel look of what you believe in and why.

Keep in mind that you will feel like stopping at points this year
cause your not used to all the different books that you will
need to memorize but remember, it's for his glory. So as you
come closer to those holidays just remember that you will
have a tournament looking at you in January. For those of
you who need help with practices and organization and of
the such, check with your local district as many quiz
seminars are being given. Another good resource for
questions and help is the "coaches corner" on

Has there been any major Rule changes this year?

There has been some questions about rule changes this
year but it has been confirmed that no major rules have
been changed in either senior or juniors for the 2012
quiz year. According to Bro Powers, only some minor
changes have taken place but these are do to clarications
and corrections.

Bible quizzing is in the air

It seems like just yesterday day that we were at our district finals
and the season had ended. For most teams the season ends in
June and you move on to others things besides quizzing.

During this last couple of months I have been able to get caught
up on stuff that I normally put off cause my time is very limited.
Then you wake up one sunny day in September and realize
that it's that time to start putting materials together, having
meetings, and just plotting out your upcoming year.

On this past off season, several new quiz sights have arose from
the internet and some of the old ones have done some make
overs. Parents start asking about dates and when seminars
are going to happen. Schedules are put together at board
meetings. The kids start asking for practice dates and yes,
you wake up, shake yourself and realize that it's not a
dream, the quiz year is starting to bear down on you
and all that free time you had, is now gone. Awhhhhh,
the quiz year is here, Lets get ready to quiz! Quiz On!

I recently received a set of questions for use for my team. Now I am
all for helping out whomever with the purchase of quiz questions but
the one thing I can't stand is the over use of a locate question or the
over use of the quotation completion and or quotation questions.

In this one set, there were three locate this verse questions just in
the first set. When I looked through the 20 game set, it had no
less than 2 locate questions in every quiz. On the average quiz,
each quiz had more than one locate this verse question. Anyone
can sit down and produce locate and quotation questions. Not
that hard. But it leaves the question of are you really out there
to help the teams or just trying to get by with as little work as
possible to make a quick buck.

The point is, anyone can produce a 15 question quiz with 30% of
that quiz as locate and quotation questions. If you really want to be
a help, take the time and produce a quality product. You just might
sell more.

Interrupting Questions - General Information

questions, so I decided to post some general

information. Enjoy!

Words to use to finish an interrupted question:

who (whom)

what

when

where

why (for what reason)

with what result

what will happen

how

do (doing, did) what

how is ____ addressed (referred to)

how many ____ and what are they

what kind of ______ *think of something described*

Try to interrupt after you hear the reference and the question word, followed by one more key word.

These are NOT key words:

was

were

did

the

that

Key words ARE: nouns, pronouns, and verbs

Words that end in "ly" (such as greatly, happily, joyfully)

are often answers to the question "how?".

On two part questions, interrupt after the first question

word. Then try to find a "matching" 2nd part to the

question, or a logical finish to the question.

Use do/did/doing what to finish a 20 or 30 point question

rather than giving a verb.

If the rest of a verse has a phrase that starts with

therefore

lest

having

Then the interruption should be finished with "why?".

Example: Acc to 3:19, men loved darkness rather

than light, why?

Answer: because their deeds were evil

I wrote about the slowness of the USPS the other day. I had
another order confirmed and was sent out that day. Well, 3
days later here is my order. Looks to be since I was using
USPS First Class mail service, my order came within 3
business days. When using USPS Media Mail, it does
take for ever to get your materials. Most orders will
take anywhere from 7days to almost two weeks.

Welcome to Senior Bible Quizzing! In 2012 entitled, Bible

Doctrine - Exploring our Apostolic DNA.

In 1960s, the General Youth Committee envisioned a system of
getting young people involved in the Bible and implemented
Senior Bible Quizzing. The ministry has progressed in its
structure from its early days; however, the unchanging

Word of God remains at the heart of it.

I don't know if the "founding fathers" of Bible Quizzing foresaw
that it would also affect its participants beyond learning Bible
verses. Whether intended or not, Bible Quizzing has become
a means of developing Christian character, leadership traits,
good study habits, time management skills, self-discipline

and a godly attitude toward both victory and defeat. These
benefits comprise a high rate of return for the investment
both to the individual quizzer and the kingdom of God.

When David was offered the sword of Goliath, he accepted
it saying, "There is none like it; give it to me" (1 Samuel
21:9). The same is true of Bible Quizzing: "There is none
like it." No other aspect of youth ministry leads students
into such an intense study of God's Word. As a result the
Church's future will be brighter because of the high caliber
of students that rise through the ranks of Bible Quizzing
and enter the world ready to wield the Sword of the Spirit,
which is the Word of God.

Would you want to go back to the block buzzers?

I saw this question posted on another site that brought back some
interesting memories. I can't exactly remember when the old blocks
were dropped but I know it was in the late 90's or so.

The complaint at the time was some quizzers had a great advantage
cause they had better reaction time and could get to the buzzer
faster while other kids had a disadvantage cause they were not
quick enough to the buzzer. Could it have been that the kids
that were good just knew the material better?

Coaching kids at that time took more time cause you had to teach
technique and you would listen intently to Bro Marvin Walkers
assessment of not having any "air time" to the buzzer. Now a
day's you just put the kids on the table and tell them to click
the buzzer as soon as they can.

Kind of the lazy man's way of doing things but with the advancement
of technology these days, even quizzers have it much easier. The one
thing though that will never change is, you still have to know your
material. Bottom line. If you don't know the material, you will never
get to click the button. Down below is a picture of the old system.

Where is my study materials?

To all coaches ordering materials, it looks like you can't depend
on the USPS any more as there mail service has really gone
down hill. With our practices ready to open, it is taking almost
two weeks to get material, this is ridiculous.

Seems one place where stuff is sitting, is in Bell Gardens, California.
I have tracked two different orders and seen where my order has
sat in the same place for 6 days. You can't contact these people.

The only way is by sending a tracking request which comes back
with no way to ask questions or contact a live person. The request
will have a delivery date on it but I have yet to get my stuff on that
date. Oh, and this is not the fault of BQPowers.

I guess this is another example of how our government is
shrinking the jobs, along with productivity.

There are two different programs that a child can participate
in. The age limits vary depending on the program the child is
interested in. For the correct information, I pulled the info
straight from the rules manual.

For Junior Quizzing:
To be eligible to participate in the Junior Bible Quiz program, one
must be not more than eleven (11) years of age as of January 1 for
the given quiz year. To be eligible to compete in the Beginner
division, one must be not more than eight (8) years of age as of
January 1 of the given quiz year, he or she will be eligible to quiz
as a beginner quizzer.

The young person must be in good standing and faithful in
attendance to his/her local church. Other qualifications, if any,
will be established by the pastor.

For Senior Quizzing:
To be eligible to participate in the Junior Bible Quiz program, one
must be single. In addition, one must be twelve (12) years of age
but not more than eighteen (18) years of age as of December 31
to quiz in the following calendar year.

The young person must be in good standing and faithful in

attendance to his/her local church that is pastored by a

licensed minister of the Unitied Pentecostal Church International.

Other qualifications, if any, will be established by the pastor.

So Ca District, where are you?

I have tried following the So-Ca District for awhile but have
found them very elusive. No quiz information seems to be
ever available to people outside the district. I posted their
district promo pushing quizzing in their own district but was
unable to get any feedback.
They never post any online schedule info anywhere, not even
on the district website. Just wondering if you exist? Do you
have teams? tournaments? Have had several wondering cause
of wanting to quiz with them but have extreme difficulty reaching
anybody in the know there. Have had some contact this site
asking for info but I have been unsuccessful in finding much
out. I hope someone in leadership sees this, so it can be passed
on to the proper contacts.

I was passing through facebook when I was told that I was getting
some love from the Coaches Corner on Facebook. First off,
thanks. I have done the same for that page and others. I am
all for people posting needed information about quizzing.

This could and should get more exposer and I have to admit
that I have seen more information on the internet over the last
few months than I have seen in a long time. It's because of
people like myself and others that have a real burden for Bible
quizzing. It sure would be nice if the people on the national
level were more in sync with us outsiders and posted up-to

Is there an age limit to being a Bible Quizzer?

There are two divisions of Bible Quizzing: There is the Junior division
(Ages 6-11) and the Senior division (Ages 12-18). The Junior division
has a beginner (4-8) and an experienced division (8-11) In actuality, a
quizzer can start anytime. Their has been some younger ones that have
quizzed. Inside the Senior division there is an Intermediate division of
quizzing for 12 to 14 year old and first year quizzers and an
Experienced division for those who are 15 through 18 years old.

The quizzer’s division is determined by the age they are on December
31st of the year prior to the quiz year (i.e. A student will be Experienced
if their 15th birthday is December 31st.) For more information about

So, what is Bible Quizzing?

Bible quizzing is a program sponsored by the United Pentecostal Church International, and began in the 1960's, with the first national tournament in 1968.

Not only does Bible quizzing help young people learn the Word of God, but it also teaches discipline, study skills, social interaction, opportunities to travel, help with time management and a proper attitude toward victory and defeat.

A buzzer system is used, with each quizzer holding a small handle with a button on the end to press when a question is asked. The system will identify which quizzer first buzzes in to answer the question.

A quiz consists 20 questions, depending on age and which division you quiz in. The first eight questions are worth 10 points, then nine 20 point questions, and the last three worth 30 points. A quizmaster reads each question, and any quizzer may buzz in.

If the quizzer interrupts the question, he/she must finish the question and give the answer. An interrupted question that is not correct will be read to the opposing team without interruption. Half the point value of the question is deducted from the team with the incorrect response. A quizzer with five errors is eliminated from the contest, and a quizzer having eight correct responses "quizzes out", and receives a ten point bonus.

There are different types of questions: a direct question needing a word or phrase answer, a quotation question requiring the quizzer to quote exactly the verse or verses needed, multiple part questions, and cross-reference questions, which are drawn from two or more different verses of the study.

The team with the most points at the end of the quiz is declared the winner, and the team that wins the most quizzes in a double elimination tournament is declared the Champions. Most states have monthly tournaments. The UPCI sponsors midyear Extravaganzas and then each state or district holds a district or state finals to see who wil move on as a national qualifier. Usually only the top two teams from the state automatically qualify for nationals but that number can vary from state to state because of the amount of teams and other factors involved.

The officials do not have to pick out the answer, and the
quote does not leave reasonable doubt in the officials’
minds as to which part of the quoted material was
intended as the answer.

Additional correctly quoted information, which precedes
that portion of the quoted material that actually answers

Sunday was the beginning of the new quarter for our
Pre-Teen Sunday School class. We were running 2
consistently over the last 12 months with several
additions now and then but Sunday morning as I
walked in, our class had grown from a choice few
to a solid 6 with the knowledge that we can have
anywhere from 8-10 on any given Sunday Morning.

This will be a challenge but a good one to have. I am
looking forward to the new additions to our class.This
week, we start teaching some Pentecostal doctrine! )

Wow! Updating is happening on several websites!

I noticed the other day that a couple of websites
have decided to update their sites. One in particlar
is the UPCquiz site. I like the new format but don't
forget to check your links. You have many outdated
and closed websites that are not active.
I also noticed that the UPCI Senior Website seems
to be getting some info on it to. I hope there is more
info than just the same old, same old. I see alot of
Ryan O' Neil's stuff so far. The good thing is Ryan
puts a lot of effort into what he does. Keep up the
great work Ryan. If I come across any other sites
I will post them here on my site. Otherwise, have
a great holiday weekend!

Interesting Post

I was checking out posts on another website when I came across
this. With the infatuation of iphones, ipads, and other devices, this
made a very good point about the Bible. It is getting so crazy now
that you can't even enjoy a good church service without texting
away, taking picturs, googling, or just wasting time in God's house.

"I wonder what would happen if we treated our BIBLE like we treat
our CELL PHONE? We CARRIED it everywhere. We flipped through it
throughout the day. We went home to get it if we FORGOT it. We
RECEIVED messages from the text. We COULDN'T live WITHOUT it.

We GAVE it to KIDS as gifts. We used it in case of emergency. One
more thing, it would NEVER be disconnected, JESUS has already
paid the bill. "

Interesting where people come from to find Information.

One thing I enjoy doing is checking my feedjet to see where
people are coming from and what they are looking for. Google
and Bing seem to be the top search engines used along with
yahoo. I hope that this page has been a help to those looking
for info. I am planning on adding more stuff as time allows. Stay
turned for upcoming events and quizzing related info as we attempt
to be that stop gap between a loss of information to plenty of useful
stuff that you can use.
